Happiness Defined

There seems to be no question that everyone wants happiness. But how does one define happiness? And should the pursuit of happiness be our only goal? Maturity comes from using our minds to navigate our emotions and behaviors so that we can consider what actions we can take to make ourselves happy – to live the life that we desire.

The question of happiness is very indefinite and although we all want it, it’s very difficult to explain with certainty what would make any of us happy. Today, next year or in twenty years. Since we are all unique, everyone has a different definition of what would make them happy, and every definition would be right. But can happiness be pursued or attained to the exclusion of all else? Like morality and ethics for example? Shouldn’t happiness include the way we feel about ourselves and whether we’re worthy of happiness?

Is Satisfaction the Same as Happiness?

When we think of happiness we think of feeling pleased or satisfied. When a project is completed it gives us a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Isn’t this also happiness? So having a happy life would mean satisfaction and therefore needing nothing more. We would have everything we need.

But doesn’t happiness also mean harmony and well-being? Peace of mind? According to Sigmund Freud, a happy man has found a way to master his inner conflicts and to become well-adjusted to his environment.

Ask yourself how much energy do you put into avoiding what is painful and unpleasant and trying to acquire what is comfortable and pleasant. How many hours do you spend working to obtain happiness? It could be nearly every waking moment.

Freedom in Disguise

We all certainly want happiness, even if it is sometimes hard to define. But aren’t we all really just seeking freedom? We wish for freedom to pursue happiness and freedom to enjoy it. Is the search for happiness really a disguised desire to be free?
