Anxiety and fear are important factors in our lives. They prepare us for action or caution when we are exposed to danger – our fight or flight response.

Unfortunately, many people suffer such disabling anxiety and fear that they cannot function normally. The problem doesn’t ever seem to go away and may, in fact, become worse. These people may be suffering from an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorder in the United States, affecting nearly 20 percent of adults in any given year, with nearly 30 percent experiencing an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. The vast majority of people go untreated.

“Keep your face always toward
the sunshine—and shadows
will fall behind you.”

Walt Whitman

Going Beyond Stress

Many people experience stress every day. Some degree of stress occurs whenever we are faced with demands and opportunities that require us to change in some manner. Stress and our reactions to it, along with the sense of fear that can also be produced, play a key role in psychological disorders.

Some people who experience a large number of stressful situations are particularly vulnerable to the onset of anxiety disorders. In addition, increase in stress levels is also linked to the onset of depression, schizophrenia, sexual dysfunction and other psychological disorders.

Unipolar, Bipolar, Mood And Depressive Disorders

Everyone’s mood changes frequently. One minute we can be up but the very next minute we’re down. For some people however, these mood swings tend to last longer. They may experience a low, sad state of unhappiness in which life seems dark and their challenges seem overwhelming. Some also experience a sudden surge in energy – apparently for no reason – called mania.

Mood problems are the center of two groups of disorders: Depressive Disorders and Bipolar Disorders. Nearly 8 percent of all adults in the United States suffer from severe depression in any given year, while 5 percent suffer from mild Depression. An estimated 20 percent of all adults experience severe Depression at some point in their lives. These rates are similar throughout most of the industrialized world.

Surveys from around the world indicate that up to 3 percent of all adults suffer from Bipolar Disorder at any given time. As many as 10 percent of children and adolescents suffer from Bipolar Disorder, or a number of Disruptive or Conduct Disorders at any given time.

Suicide and Warning Signs

Humans are the only species that intentionally put an end to their own lives. Suicide has been recorded throughout history. However most instances of news relating to suicide are about people who are recognizable, such as well known actors, musicians or business people for example.

It is a little known fact, however, that during any given day in the United States there are more than 60 suicides. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death, with an estimated one million suicides worldwide and more than 36,000 in the United States annually.

There are nearly 25 million attempted suicides globally, a staggering number, with 600,000 unsuccessful attempts in the U.S. alone. According to researchers and investigators, these figures may even be too low. For example, Deaths by overdose, while considered accidental may actually disguise real suicide such as with auto collisions, drownings and other accidents (Wertheimer, 2001; Lester, 2000). Many apparent accidents sadly are probably intentional.

Suicide, while not currently classified as a Mental Disorder and certainly the result of other Psychological Disorders, Parasuicides, unsuccessful attempts during the last two years, is categorized as Suicide Behavior Disorder (APA, 2012, 2013).

Whether suicides or attempts represent a distinct Disorder, Psychological Dysfunction, emotional turmoil or a distorted view of life, it is nevertheless a permanent solution to a temporary problem that eliminates any further options of correcting the problem.
