A phobia is an irrational fear that disrupts normal behavior. Phobias center anxiety on a specific object, activity or situation. Many people live with this common psychological disorder but some specific phobias can lead to incapacitating efforts to avoid the feared situation.
Most Common Disorder
Anxiety disorders rank as the most common mental disorder with more than 40 million Americans being affected. Social Phobia encompasses a large majority of individuals with an anxiety disorder. It affects more than 15 million adults in the United States. The majority of people first experience symptoms in early childhood or in their teen years.
Extreme Shyness
Potentially embarrassing social situations, or being critically judged are difficult for those with a social phobia, who feel an intense fear of being scrutinized by others. The anxious person may avoid speaking up, eating out, or engaging in small talk at parties or social gatherings. Or they will sweat, tremble, or have diarrhea when interacting in these ways. Social Phobia is shyness taken to an extreme.
