In routine problem solving or thinking, there is only one correct answer. The problem is to find it. This leads to convergent thinking – lines of thought that converge on the answer. To be creative, the solution to the problem must be more than novel, unusual, or original. It must also be practical as an invention, and sensible if it is an idea.
You can become more creative by practicing divergent thinking, and by taking risks, analyzing ideas and finding unusual connections between the ideas (Baer, 1993; Stornberg, 2001).
Living More Creatively (Flow)
Psychology professor Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi saw flow as a vital element in activity of all kinds. Especially important in making work more rewarding and meaningful. Here are some ideas to help get you started:
- Find something that surprises you every day.
- Try to surprise a minimum of one person every day.
- If something captures your interest, pursue it.
- Make a commitment to do things well.
- Seek challenges.
- Take time for thinking and reasoning.
- Start doing more of what you enjoy, less of what you dislike.
- Try to look at problems from as many viewpoints as possible.
If these ideas aren’t helpful, remember that life is not a standardized test with a single set of correct answers. It is more like a blank canvas on which you can create ideas that express your unique talents and interests. Try to surprise at least one person today – yourself!
