“Know thyself” is one of the foundations of achieving human strength and happiness, according to psychologist Erich Fromm (1900-1980).
A lot of time, effort and money is spent by many people in an attempt to find the “self” they feel is most worthy to achieve acceptance and most likely to result in being loved or desired.
Connection and Acceptance
Life is difficult and filled with emotional frustration. We live in a constant state of stress and struggle. As a result, we are constantly trying to balance our true nature, our existence as a separate being, with the need for connection and acceptance.
Part of our inherent self only knows how to live with others. We live with nature and we “life” with other people. Yet, at the same time we see ourselves as isolated, alone and separated from nature. And what makes matters worse is that we have the ability and capacity to ponder our separation and isolation. We have the unique gift of being aware of ourself.
Intellect Transcends Nature
Psychologists suggest that our anxiety and feelings of powerlessness are the result of our separation from nature. This is because of the growth of our intellect, which makes us aware of our separateness. Our intellect lets us transcend nature, to have productive lives and attain superiority over our surroundings, but it also makes us realize that we exist alone in this world. Our intellect makes us aware of our own mortality and the mortality of our loved ones.
Loneliness to Hope
Herein lies the source of our struggle and tension, the unbearable loneliness we are constantly trying to overcome.
Understanding this inherent dilemma gives us hope. We can overcome our sense of isolation and alienation. We have the ability to find meaning in our lives, and purpose in life. We can decide to follow a path of joy and fulfillment or we can continue down our road of dissatisfaction. The choice is ours.
What’s Stopping Us?
While we strive to become free and unique individuals, we still have a need for unity with others, seeking out the comfort and acceptance of a group. We must strive to overcome this obstacle. We must find our own independent sense of self with our own personal views and values. By understanding our own personal uniqueness we discover that our ideas and abilities are what differentiates each of us from everyone else.
Only then do we reach a point where we give birth to ourselves, to free ourselves from our loneliness, confusion, anxiety and apathy.
Discovering Our Uniqueness
By discovering our individuality we find wholeness. We achieve this by following our own ideas and passions and most of all, through creative purpose. The true test of letting go of uncertainties results in creativity.
Creativity gives us an open mind, to become non-comformist, and allows for more than one answer. The path to creativity will lead to clarity, serenity, flow and happiness.
