Avoidant Personality Disorder is one of a cluster of disorders accompanied by anxiety, called Anxious Personality Disorders. These are accompanied by feelings of fear, nervousness, and poor or low self-esteem. People with this disorder often have strong feelings of rejection from criticism and being judged negatively by others, feel uncomfortable in social gatherings, and tend to avoid attending group or social activities and contact with others.
Possible Heredity
Avoidant Personality Disorder appears in both men and women and affects as many as one million people in the United States. This disorder often occurs as a family trait and suggests an inherited genetic connection.
Shy and Awkward
People having this disorder are often over-sensitive, i.e., their feelings are easily hurt by criticism. They generally have few friends. They tend to be shy, awkward and self-conscious in social situations for fear of doing or saying something wrong or embarrassing. They seldom take chances or try something new.
Avoidant Personality Disorder, as with most Personality Disorders, is usually not diagnosed during childhood.
