Personality Disorders

A personality disorder is a mental disorder involving rigid, unhealthy patterns of thinking, functioning and behaving. Personality disorders cause major problems in relationships, employment, social activities and school. Individuals with personality disorders may not even be aware they have a problem because their thoughts and behaviors seem normal to them.

Personality Disorders are psychological disorders characterized by inflexible and maladaptive patterns of behavior that impair one’s social functioning.

Cluster #1

One cluster of disorders is accompanied by anxiety, such as fear of rejection, which is associated with avoidant personality disorder.

Cluster #2

A second cluster of disorders is accompanied by eccentric behaviors such as emotionless disengagement, as associated with schizoid personality disorder.

Cluster #3

A third cluster of disorders exhibits dramatic or impulsive behaviors, as associated with histrionic personality disorder. This is often accompanied by shallow, attention-getting emotions, which are designed to gain another’s praise and reassurance.

Narcissism

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is displayed by people who are self-focused and exaggerate their own importance through success fantasies. They usually have difficulty accepting criticism, often reacting with rage or shame.

Autism

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), better known as autism, is a cluster of mental dysfunctions characterized by extreme self-absorption and lack of empathy, repetitive motor activities and impairment of language and conceptual skills.

Maladaptive Behavior is behavior that interferes with the activities of daily life or that is inappropriate in a given setting.

Internet Shopping Addiction is behavior characterized by compulsive, episodic purchasing of goods facilitated and exacerbated by their accessibility online. Also called Online Shopping Addiction, eBay Addiction, Compulsive Shopping.

Obsessions

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions accompanied by unreasonable thoughts and/or fears that lead to repetitive and/or unnecessary behaviors.

Cyber Issues

Cyber Maladaptive Behavior is behavior that inhibits a person’s ability to adjust to particular situations in cyber contexts, such as attitudes, emotions, responses and patterns of thought that result in negative outcomes.

Discernment of Specific Type

It is often difficult to determine the specific type of personality disorder due to an overlap or more than one type being present along with other disorders such as depression, anxiety, anger or alcohol or substance abuse.
