A Word of Caution

The definitions and discussions of the various Paraphilic Disorders, like those of Sexual Dysfunctions, while adult in nature, are also strongly influenced by the norms of the particular society in which they occur. (Bhugra et al., 2010) Some clinicians argue that paraphilic behaviors should be considered only when other individuals are hurt by them. (Wright, 2010) Epecially in light of the stigma associated with sexual disorders and the self-revulsion that many people experience when they are accused of or believe they have such a disorder. We need to be very careful about applying labels to others or ourselves.

Keep in mind that for years clinicians considered homosexuality a paraphilic disorder, and their judgements were used to justify and enact laws and even police action against gay individuals. (Dickinson et al, 2012; Kirby, 2000) Only when the gay rights movement helped change society’s understanding and attitudes toward homosexuality did clinicians stop considering it a disorder. (Drescher, 2010) In the meantime, the clinical field had unintentionally contributed to the persecution, anxiety, depression and humiliation of millions of people because of personal sexual behavior that differed from conventional norms.
