Internet Addiction

In the addict’s world there is ongoing tension between a person’s normal self and the addicted self. A Jekyll-and-Hyde struggle emerges. The addictive system is so compelling that the addict feels it would be deadly to stop it. Yet, as the system continues, the person’s values, priorities and loved ones are attacked. Sometimes a major crisis is necessary to restore perspective.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has spent many years discussing various internet addictive behaviors, including gambling, internet gaming, shopping, excessive eating, drinking, smoking and excessive sexual behavior.

Internet Gaming Disorder

In the case of Internet Gaming Disorder, more than 250 studies in numerous countries indicate a persistent and escalating problem among youth, adolescents and young adults. Most are males between the ages of 12 to 20. Brain pattern studies show similar patterns as the cravings for drugs in drug addicts and the craving for alcohol in alcoholics.

Internet Gaming Disorder is more prevalent in Asian countries than in Europe and North America. China, one of the first countries to define internet “overuse” as a clinical condition, developed Government Treatment Centers to cure teens of internet addiction. In South Korea, Government studies found an escalating number of “addicted” teens who are neglecting sleep, schoolwork, and real-life friends in order to play online games. By 2015, South Korea had 500 “internet addiction” inpatient units in hospitals and treatment centers. In Taiwan, stiff fines on parents are imposed if their children are found to be excessively using electronic devices.

Internet Sex

Compulsive internet-sex or cyber-sex is another significant segment of internet addiction for many men, as well as women, according to the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. Therapists report that patients addicted to sex online have the same problems associated with drug, substance and alcohol abuse.
