Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

We all engage in negative self-talk once in a while. Learning to recognize it for what it is and replacing it with more positive and rational thinking will lead you to a more positive life.

Listening to and acting on negative self-talk may have become a problem for you in the past. By challenging this constant stream of harmful thoughts you can change your self-talk and learn to substitute with healthy replacement thoughts.

The following questions are very helpful in evaluating your self-talk. You might want to write them down and carry them with you until you can quickly remember them to challenge any negative thoughts as needed.

  • Is my self-talk helping me protect my health and life?
  • Is my self-talk based on objective reality or facts?
  • Is my self-talk keeping me out of conflict with others?
  • Is my self-talk helping me reach my short and long term goals?
  • Is my self-talk leading me to feel the way I want without alcohol or drugs?

Ask yourself these questions throughout your day to help you develop positive statements or phrases that keep you in a positive mood.
