Self-Actualization – Finding Purpose

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose” said American author Robert Byrne (1930-2016). This important yet simple statement is the answer to a question that has been asked throughout all of history. Why are we here? What is the purpose of our lives? Underlying these questions is the need to identify what will make us truly satisfied and how to find it.

Who Do I Want to Be?

In order to reach the most highly developed state of consciousness and realize our greatest potential we must discover our true purpose. Who we want to be. We all need to know what our true purpose really is. Dawna Markova helps us explore purpose in her thought-provoking book “I Will Not Die an Unlived Life” (2000). Markova urges us to ask these key questions in exploring our life’s purpose:

• What is still unfinished for me to experience?

• What is still unfinished for me to give?

• What is still unfinished for me to learn?

• What is still unfinished for me to heal?

Exploring your life’s purpose is a process so don’t expect these answers to come quickly. Purposes produces meaning. Purpose helps us discover what truly matters. Another question we might ask is:

 • Do I even know what I’d really like to do?

What Is My Passion?

Most people can’t answer that question, but the moment you begin to wonder, you are well on your way to discovering your true purpose. You might also ask yourself: What is my passion? Or, you might take the opposite point of view and explain what you don’t want. Deciding what the rest of your life is going to be is a serious matter and only you can make that decision. So don’t be swayed by the opinions of your friends and family.

You are on a road to discover your purpose. You are not alone. Most people don’t have a clue why they are here. In fact, a study was done by researchers asking three thousand survey participants “what do they have to live for?” Ninety-Four percent said they did not know their purpose. This is the definition of unhappiness.

You, however, have just begun your journey of figuring it all out. Realizing that you indeed have a purpose is what steers you. What keeps you going is the passion. Passion helps us overcome the obstacle in our road. Passion is what gets you going in the morning.

Do What You Love

Remember, do what you love and love what you do.

“Life should not be a voyage to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid broadside in a cloud of dust, thoroughly used up, completely worn out, and loudly broadcasting WOW! WHAT A RIDE!” (Hunter S. Thompson 1937-2005).
