How materialistic are you? Can you recognize your own materialistic tendencies? If you are not sure, rate the following statements on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 strongly disagree, 2 disagree, 3 neutral, 4 agree, 5 strongly agree).
To determine your materialism score first “reverse” score your rating of the 4th (keep your life simple) statement. That is, if you gave yourself a 1, cross it out and change it to 5. If you gave yourself a 2 change it to 4, change a 4 to a 2, and change a 5 to a 1.
Now add up your new nine ratings. Researchers have found that on average people score 26.2 on this scale. If you scored closer to 36, your materialism is in the top 20 percent of your peers.
Less Friendly
It is important to understand your materialistic tendencies because research shows that materialism makes us less friendly, actually depletes happiness, threatens satisfaction with our relationships, makes us less likable, less empathetic and makes us less likely to help others and less likely to contribute to our community.
